Academic Support Interventions - Literacy and Maths

At Soundwell Academy we offer literacy and mathematics interventions. Through personalised support in small groups or 1:1 this provides additional support to students helping them to bridge learning gaps.

Literacy Support Interventions

A phonics reading method called 'That Reading Thing', specifically designed for teenagers is used to develop reading skills.  It is a fun, safe and age-appropriate vocabulary and uses a combination of decodable practice text and authentic reading material.

Inference reading sessions are available for children to allow them to build on key comprehension strategies.  We use a scheme developed by Leicester City Council which focuses on 'instructional conversations' in groups to help boost reading comprehension.

Maths Support Interventions

In maths, Numicon Intervention Programme is used to enable children to catch up.  This program aims to enhance their mathematical understanding through the use of Numicon, a proven, multi-sensory learning tool that is tailored to meet the needs of students who may benefit from additional support in maths.  It is a hands-on, visual approach to learning that focuses on improving numerical fluency, mental arithmetic, and problem-solving abilities.

Precision Teaching is a research-based intervention that breaks down learning tasks into small, manageable components, through short, focused practice. It is particularly effective for students who require additional support to improve their accuracy and speed in reading, writing and mathematics.
